FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

Code specifying the topical term or geographic name with which the 1XX heading in a subdivision record may be used in a particular thesaurus.

Appropriate only in a subdivision record or an established heading and subdivision record. The code may correspond to all or a portion of the subject category code contained in field 072 (Subject Category Code) in an established heading record for a topical term or geographic name.

■ EXAMPLES
In the following example, the subdivision utilization may generally be used with seven categories of terms in the MeSH system, i.e., those coded in field 073 as E1 (Diagnosis), E2 (Therapeutics), etc. The topical term heading Mental Health Services is in categories F4 (Disciplines, Tests, Therapy, Services) and N2 (Facilities, Manpower and Services). The category designator N2 in field 073 subfield $a of the subdivision record and the subject category code N2 in field 072 subfield $a of the established heading record provide a link between the subdivision utilization and the topical term heading Mental Health Services.
