FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

Classification code for a geographic area associated with the 151 field in an established heading record or 181 field in a subdivision record for a geographic name.
This code can provide more precise geographic access than the codes contained in field 043 (Geographic Area Code). Each main geographic area code and any related subarea codes associated with the heading are contained in a separate 052 field.

Source of the code in subfield $a and information in the other subfields.
'#' - Library of Congress Classification
Code is derived from the Library of Congress Classification-Class G and expanded Cutter number lists for place names. Cutter numbers for place names in the United States are also published in Geographic Cutters. The Library of Congress maintains the Library of Congress Classification, Geographic Cutters, and the Cutter number lists.

Classification number is taken from a classification system other than that specified by one of the other defined indicator values and for which an identifying source code is given in subfield $2.

SUBFIELD CODES

Four- to six-character numeric or alphanumeric code for the main geographic area associated with the heading.
If the first indicator position contains value #, the code contains a four to six-character numeric code that consists of the appropriate classification number from the range G3190-G9980 derived from the Library of Congress Classification-Class G by dropping the letter G. If the first indicator contains value 7, a code from another list is used and that list is specified in subfield $2.
Code is derived from the LC class G schedule by dropping the letter G.

$b - Geographic classification subarea code
Alphanumeric code, assigned from expanded Cutter number lists, that represents a subarea of the geographic area coded in subfield $a. Cutter numbers for places in the U.S. are published in Geographic Cutters.
If the first indicator position contains value #, the code is derived from the Library of Congress-Class G or the expanded Cutter number lists for place names. The subfield may also contain a geopolitical subarea code from FIPS 10-4, or another code list as specified in subfield $2. Each geographic subarea code is contained in a separate subfield $b. Subfield $b may be repeated for subareas falling within a main area with the same code.

First indicator value 0 (U.S. Dept. of Defense Classification) was made obsolete. Value 1 was defined as U.S. Dept. of Defense Classification to replace it.
